Since this is a new program and there are a lot of electives, it is obvious to have doubts and concerns. And to clear all your doubts and concern about Ignou BAG Syllabus you need to read this article properly.
Let’s begin.
First of all, you should know some key points about Ignou BAG Course.
- Bachelor of Arts General is a Minimum 3 year’s undergraduate degree.
- The student will get Maximum 6 years to complete this course.
- This course in under Credit Based Choice System (CBCS).
- In order to complete Ignou BA Course, a student needs to have a total of 132 Credits.
- You will earn 22 credits after the completion of each semester.
- One credit is equal to 30 hours of study credit.
Now we will discuss the main topic of Ignou BAG Syllabus.
We will explain the complete Ignou Syllabus for BA General course in a very simple way. Hope there will be no doubt after reading this. Because we are going to explain the syllabus semester-wise.
First of all please look at this picture and then we will go to the semester-wise subject chart.
This chart shows you, how you will get 132 credits out of 24 subjects. So there are a total of 24 Ignou BAG Books, 4 subjects in every semester. You will get 22 Credits from 4 subjects in the First Semester.
First Year Ignou BAG Syllabus: Semester 1 & 2
First-year of Ignou BA General course will include semester 1 and semester 2. Each semester will make you earn 22 credits. Hence the first year = 44 credits.
You will study 4 subjects in the first semester and 4 subjects in the second semester. You will choose the subjects from the following three elective categories in each semester respectively.
- One Subject from Language Elective- Core Course
- Two subjects from two different discipline- core course.
- One subject from Ability enhancement Course (AECC)

Language Elective Core Course:
Choose any one subject from the following semester list. In the first semester, you have 4 language elective options but in 2nd semester only two options are there. You can take any one subject in each semester.

Discipline Core Course:
There are 12 different discipline available in Ignou BAG syllabus. You can select any two discipline in the first semester. And you will choose two subjects from the same discipline in the all upcoming semesters.
Note: You cannot change the discipline in the 2nd Semester. So you have to select the two subjects in the 2nd semester under the same discipline.
For the example- if you choose Anthropology and Public Administration in the first semester, then you will repeat the same discipline Anthropology and Public admin in all semesters.

Second Year: Semester 3 & 4 of Ignou BA General
So’ first-year subjects are clear now. Henceforth we will see which 8 subjects of third & fourth Semester Ignou BAG Syllabus.
likewise in 1st and 2nd semester, you will study 1 Language Course, 2 Discipline core course and one Skill enhancement subject in each sem 3rd and 4th. Hence You will get a total of 22 Credits from each semester and a total of 44 credits from the Second year of BAG.

Third Year Ignou Syllabus BA General: 5th & 6th Semester
3rd year means the final year of Ignou BAG Syllabus has 8 subjects like the first year and second year. 3rd year means 5th semester and 6th semester.
In the 5th Semester, you will study 4 subjects out of the following three elective categories.
- 2 Discipline-Specific Electives (DSEs) : 12 Credits
- 1 Skill Enhancement Course (SEC): 4 Credit
- 1 Generic Elective (GE): 6 Credit
Similarly in 6th Semester, you will study the 4 subjects from the above elective categories. Now let’s see what are the subject options available in each elective category for 5th & 6th Semester.
Discipline-Specific Elective Subjects: 5th & 6th Semester
You have multiple choices in this section. But remember:
- Choose the one subject from two Discipline.
- And choose the same discipline category which you have taken at the beginning of the course.

Generic Electives is the fifth category of Ignou BAG Syllabus. There are many subjects in this category but you have to choose one subject in semester 5 and one subject in semester 6.
