Rote learning still plagues our system, students study only to score marks in exams, and sometimes to crack exams like IIT JEE, AIIMS or CLAT. The colonial masters introduced education systems in India to create clerks and civil servants, and we have not deviated much from that pattern till today. If once the youngsters prepared in masse for civil services and bank officers exams, they now prepare to become engineers. If there are a few centres of educational excellence, for each of those there are thousands of mediocre and terrible schools, colleges and now even universities that do not meet even minimum standards. If things have changed a little bit somewhere, elsewhere things have sunk into further inertia, corruption and lack of ambition.
Creating a few more schools or allowing hundreds of colleges and private universities to mushroom is not going to solve the crisis of education in India. And a crisis it is – we are in a country where people are spending their parent’s life savings and borrowed money on education – and even then not getting standard education, and struggling to find employment of their choice. In this country, millions of students are victim of an unrealistic, pointless, mindless rat race. The mind numbing competition and rote learning do not only crush the creativity and originality of millions of Indian students every year, it also drives brilliant students to commit suicide.
We also live in a country where the people see education as the means of climbing the social and economic ladder. If the education system is failing – then it is certainly not due to lack of demand for good education, or because a market for education does not exist.
Education system in India is failing because of more intrinsic reasons. There are systemic faults that do not let our demand for good education translate into a great marketplace with excellent education services. Let’s explore something else in this one: what should change in India education system? What needs to be fixed at the earliest?
Here is my wish list:-
Need of Skill Based Education in India
Instead of teaching skill we at present more and more focused on grades & theoretical knowledge but What we believe that if one has skill in his/her hand he would never live a hard life, there is a proverb “By giving a man a fish means you feed him one day, by teaching him how to catch a fish you feed him lifelong” means if you teach a man a skill, you enable him for lifetime. Today we all know that after leaving the College/University the lessons and knowledge is largely forgotten after the semester exam is over Still, year after year Indian students focus on cramming information. The best crammers are rewarded by the system. This is one of the fundamental flaws of our education system.
Creativity, Exclusive Ideas, Research and Innovation must be Rewarded
When do something beyond your syllabus or try to take risk you often mocked this is the major fault line of our education system. Our education system rarely rewards what deserves highest academic accolades. Proofs are lying in the history that innovation happens by the creative minds not by memorising. Memorising is no learning. Our testing and marking systems need to be built to recognize original contributions, in form of creativity, problem solving, valuable original research and innovation. If we could do this successfully Indian education system would have changed overnight. India was and is with full of creative mind and we just need a system to cattle those creativities and develop them in nation building tasks.
Get Rid of Illogical Reservation System
So-far we have learnt that caste based reservation system in our country has not given the fruitful result our constitution makers had expected. Instead it made the situation going other way around, but we must create the environment for equal competition and universal education for everyone and if someone needs financial push-up we must have the proper arrangement for those. We must learn that talent does not die because of his/her caste but it dies due to lack of money.
If we want to emerge as a country build on a knowledge economy, driven by highly educated people – we need to make good education so universally available that reservation will lose its meaning. Moreover, we do not have reservation applicable in top level jobs and posts than why only clerk level has reservation, and there is no reservation in online education because it can be avail by anyone at large scale, world’s top most universities now a days offering large number of courses online and today you can easily attend the live class taught by the top professor of Harvard University online if you want beyond the boundaries of the countries.
Get the Real Teachers Who have Knowledge to teach
Today we see in news headlines that many teachers in rural areas have become teacher where they themselves need a teacher first. They are not well educated to teach someone, this kind of teaching could dangerous. Thousands of teachers in India are just wasting the valuable time of your children everyday all over the country.
It’s time to create the force of the superstar teachers and in the modern era of Internet a teacher’s knowledge could not be limited to the classroom but the whole world can know about very easily. And this could not happen till we don’t see the leaders and successful entrepreneurs in the teaching positions just salary paid teacher could not make much difference.
Technology & Infrastructure Reforms in Education
India has big load of population and therefore our education system also face the same load which is leading to privatisation of the education and people are majorly looking this as a money making job. Technology and Internet has changed the many things around the world and India need to embrace internet and technology if it has to reduce some Burdon of the population on education system majority of which stay in the remote villages and now we have computer and Internet, it makes sense to invest in the technology and infrastructure that will make access to knowledge easier than ever.
Re-define the purpose of the education system
